There have been a few app developers who have released their own take on a ChatGPT app for iOS. None of those have been endorsed or supported by OpenAI, the organisation that developed and released ChatGPT in 2022. The good news is that an official app has been released. The bad news is that it’s only available to users with an Apple account in the USA.
Update:
ChatGPT for iOS is now available in over 40 new countries. However, Australia has still not made the list for some reason.
The new app, called OpenAI ChatGPT [Note: this link goes to the USA App Store], lets you do the same sorts of things you can do from the web version of ChatGPT with the notable addition of being able to enter queries by talking to the app. The app is free and doesn’t have any advertising.
You will need to create an account to use the app. Queries you enter in the app will sync across devices so you can start something on your phone and then pick it up again later on your Mac or iPad (using the web app – there’s no macOS or iPadOS version).
The app will be released in other regions “in the coming weeks” according to OpenAI’s official announcement. Access to ChatGPT Plus, a version of the chatbot that uses the much larger GPT-4 large language model and offers access to new features and faster response times, is accessible through the app. However, a subscription to ChatGPT Plus costs USD$20 per month.
