Transport NSW has entered an agreement with Apple to use Express Mode for Apple Pay. This will enable public transport patrons to tap on and off trains, buses, trams and ferries without needing to unlock their iPhone or Apple Watch.
While the ability to use a credit or debit card or Apple Pay has been available for some time, the use of Apple Pay has required users to unlock their devices first. With Express Mode for Apple Pay, eligible credit and debit cards can be used to tap on and off while devices are locked.
A staggered deployment of the new technology is already in progress with almost 13000 readers already upgraded and over a third of bus readers completed. The function expected to be fully operational across the state-wide Opal network in the coming weeks.
The Opal card can still be used with a digital version of the card expected at the end of 2023
