If you’re anything like me, there are a handful of websites you go to each day. For me, that’s largely focussed on various bits of the Microsoft 365 service with Sharepoint and Planner the main tools I use. But, other than finding them amongst my bookmarks, I can now add them to the Dock as web apps.
What’s a web app?
A web app is a web page that loads inside its own browser window. Unlike other bowser windows, the web app doesn’t allow tabbed browsing or show any of the other browser controls such as a back button or the address bar.
For all intents and purposes, a web app looks and behaves like a regular application installed on your Mac.
How to create a web app
Here’s a step-by-step process for making a web site into a web app.
- Browse to the site
- From the Safari File menu, choose “Add to Dock”
- Give your new web app a name
Why bother with a web app?
There are a couple of good reasons I can think of.
Firstly, they give you one-click access to sites you use. Instead of launching and eating for Safari, and then either entering the address or clicking on a bookmark, one click on the Dock launches the site.
Secondly, if you find yourself drowning in browser tabs, having your most used sites in their own browser windows helps you stay focussed.
