Apple has quietly announced the release of a new Apple Pencil. While the original Apple Pencil, with its Lightning charger stays on the market to support owners of legacy iPads, the new model supports USB-C charging with a port hidden under a clever sliding end.
Apple says the new Apple Pencil will be available beginning in early November and priced at $139. The price undercuts the original Apple Pencil by $20. The updated model has a matte finish and a flat side that magnetically attaches to the side of iPad for storage, the new Apple Pencil pairs and charges with a USB-C cable. That means there’s no wireless charging although the magnetic attachment should lead to fewer lost pencils.
The new Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPad models with a USB-C port. This includes
- 10th generation Pad
- 4th and 5th generations iPad Air
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations iPad Pro 11-inch
- 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations iPad Pro 12.9-inch
- 6th generation iPad mini
