The introduction of USB-C has, in the main part, been a boon for computer users. We finally have a connector that can be used either way, across a range of devices. But it’s also spawned massive confusion. Some cables can only charge while others are capable of carrying data. Former Mythbusters host, Adam Savage, looks inside Apple’s $199 USB-C cable and shows why not all cables are the same.
Savage’s team take a deep dive into Apple’s $199 USB-C cable using a CT scanner and analyse what’s inside the connector and how the cable is made.
I’ve looked at USB-C previously. In my view, it’s close to impossible for most consumers to tell the difference between different cables. Outwardly, they may all look alike but there is a world of difference between a $2 cable and $200 cable as Savage points out.
