How to create a Web App in macOS Sequoia

Many of us visit the same sites every day. That might be something like Microsoft 365’s SharePoint or some other online tool. While you can bookmark sites in Safari, you can also add them to your Dock just like any other app by creating a Web App.

What’s a web app?

A web app is a web page that loads inside its own browser window. Unlike other bowser windows, the web app doesn’t allow tabbed browsing or show any of the other browser controls such as a back button or the address bar. A web app looks and behaves like a regular application installed on your Mac.

How to create a web app

Here’s a step-by-step process for making a web site into a web app.

  1. Browse to the site
  2. From the Safari File menu, choose “Add to Dock”
  3. Give your new web app a name

Why bother with a web app?

There are a couple of good reasons I can think of.

Firstly, they give you one-click access to sites you use. Instead of launching Safari, and then either entering the address or clicking on a bookmark, a single click on the Dock launches the site.

And having your most used sites in their own browser windows helps you stay focussed.
