Apple has reduced support for almost all of its AirPort products

Apple has moved almost all of its network products into obsolete status. That means Apple no longer offers any support or hardware servicing. The sole exception is the AirPort Express 802.11n which remains on the company’s vintage list.

The Apple obsolete product list is updated when Apple deems a product is either vintage or obsolete. Products are moved to the vintage list when Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than five and less than seven years ago. While vintage products are outside warranty, Apple continues to offer parts and service for them.

When a product reaches obsolete status, more than seven years after Apple stops distributing them for sale, parts and service support are left to the third-party market.

Apple’s AirPort products have a rich history. The first AirPort products were released in 1999 and looked like small flying saucers. The design changed through the early 2000s and also saw the introduction of the AirPort Express which enabled users to connect any audio device through a standard 3.5mm audio cable and thus adding AirPlay capability.

By 2007, the flying saucer gave way to a flatter, boxy form factor, then a tower design. There was also the Time Capsule, that integrated a hard drive to enable wireless Time Machine backups.
