MOVE CRC has funded development of a Trusted Transport Positioning System. The funding will support QUT and partners including Toyota Motor Corporation, RACQ, and Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads to delve the system. The Local Positioning System (LPS) will work independently of overseas satellites.
The GPS systems we rely on today in iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches use a number of different systems.
- GPS developed by the United States
- GLONASS – a Russian system
- Galileo – created by the European Union
- QZSS – a Japanese system designed to enhance the GPS in the Asia-Oceania regions
- BeiDou – a Chinese system
Professor Michael Milford from QUT said the Local Positioning System builds on years of research.
“We’ve identified a range of issues with current systems and some great use cases for widely available positioning information. Our ultimate aim is to create a sovereign Australian-made positioning capability with widespread utility.”
The LPS project will kick off with four high-value transport applications. This will focus on providing locational tracking for transport assets where existing solutions do not work such as in underground tunnels.
The testing and evaluation will be done with input from partners Toyota, QLD TMR and RACQ. If successful, the project will provide a foundation for larger scale commercial investment, development and deployment.
