Clips app clipped by Apple

Apple’s experiment with short video production, an app called Clips, is over. Clips was made to create Instagram and TikTok friendly videos but never really took off.

Apple hasn’t updated the app in a while and has now pulled it from the App Store. Apple has advised users to save videos to another location. It also recommends several other apps for creating short videos.

Clips can continue to be used with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or earlier. But, at some point, I assume the app will stop working following a system update.

Clips can’t be downloaded by new users. If you have previously downloaded it you can redownload it. Apple provides instructions on redownloading apps.

When an app is removed from the App Store or is no longer supported by its developer look for alternatives. Relying on an unsupported app can be a recipe for disaster. Some years ago, Filemaker created a simple database app called Bento. I used it to create a workflow app I relied on. But once it was dumped by the developer I had no choice but to move as subsequent updates Apple made to macOS (OS X at the time) broke key features in the app.

The same is likely to happen with Clips at some point.
