NBNCo’s recent Accelerate Great initiative has delivered almost immediate increases in broadband speeds. The average download speed for Australian fixed broadband users has reached 109.19Mbps, exceeding both the global average and 100Mbps for the first time.
Australia’s position in the Speedtest Global Index moved up to 55th place – up five spots from the previous report. That’s a massive improvement on our position earlier this year. At the end of 2024, our broadband speed ranking ranking was 79th with an average download speed of 78.47Mbps.
Accelerate great delivers
The Accelerate Great program delivered significant performance increases at no additional cost to consumers.
- 100Mbps plans went up to 500Mbps
- 250Mbps plans went up to 750Mbps
- 500Mbps plans went up to 1000Mbps
The new figures from Speedtest cover September 2025. The Accelerate Great program took effect in mid September, although some service providers offered the boost earlier. So, the full impact on average speeds has probably not been properly reflected in the rankings.

It’s possible we could see a significant jump over the next couple of months as we have a full month of data, consumers reboot modems (this was required by some service providers) and take advantage of some of the aggressive market offers that are currently available.
The most recent ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Program report found that many people were happy with their connection speeds with reported performance exceeding expectations. We could see increased performance and consumer satisfaction as the full impact of Accelerated Great is felt.
If our average speed reached 200Mbps, we could jump into the top 30 countries.
This is a good time to reassess your service providers and whether you are receiving the best possible price and performance. A quick scan of the market reveals that a 500/40 plan can vary in price from $64.99 per month (for six months) up to $113 per month. While performance can vary between providers and even between areas with the same provider, it’s worth shopping around.
In most cases, it is trivially easy to switch providers. There’s rarely a need for a technician to attend. At most, you may need to turn your NBN modem off and on again.
