It’s no longer a surprise that Apple will be announcing a new mixed reality headset at WWDC 2023. That rumour has been flying around for several months with pretty much every Apple website showing renders of what they expect to look like as well as expected pricing. But another recent move by Apple signals the impending arrival of some other hardware.
Apple allows owners of older Macs, iPhones, iPads and other devices to trade their old gear in for a discount on its latest kit. The Apple trade-in site has been updated to accept the Mac Studio and the recent M2-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. That suggests that those units will be seeing an upgrade with the anticipated M3 system-on-a-chip or new models with different options.
As well as processor updates, we can expect the MacBook Air to get a new model with a 15-inch display expected to join the line-up.
An update to the Mac Studio may be less likely with its inclusion a possible inducement for owners to shift to a MacBook Pro. Or perhaps the fabled Mac Pro may finally appear. That’s the last Intel-based system in Apple’s range with an M-series model running about two years late. Maybe Apple has decided to shelve that system with the Mac Studio its replacement.
WWDC is traditionally a software-focussed event with Apple using it as the first opportunity to show the latest versions of its operating systems. This year, we’ll see the arrival of a new platform to support the mixed reality headset as well as significant updates to its development tools so software creators can start leveraging the new platform in all sorts of ways.
