How to clear old addresses from Mail

Hot on the heels the USA’s National Security Advisor Mike Waltz saying that journalist was accidentally shared confidential battle plans because he accepted an iPhone-suggested updated contact number, I thought it would be worth sharing a tip.

Almost everyone has accidentally sent an email to an old email address as Apple Mail suggests addresses. For example, a business contact may have changed job and you accidentally send a message to their old workplace. Or you may wonder why a friend isn’t answering your invitation to lunch.

How do you clean up Mail’s list of previous contacts?

  1. Launch Mail.
  2. From the Window menu, choose Previous Recipients.
  3. To find an address to delete you can:
    1. Sort the list by name, email address or date by clicking on the column heading to find the address you want to remove; or
    2. Type part of the name or address in the Search box in the top-right corner
  4. Once you find an address you want to remove, select it and press the delete key on your keyboard or click the Remove From List button in the bottom left corner.

Clearing that list of incorrect addresses could  save you some embarrassment  – or from accidentally sharing top secret plans.
