Rumour and leak round up

When things are quiet on the Apple front, the number of leaks and rumours seems to grow almost daily. The rumour mill is grinding with everything from Apple products that fold or roll-up through to new Macs. Here’s a round up of some of the more believable rumours and leaks going around.

Codenames for next year’s Apple software releases

Apple uses internal codenames for all its operating systems while they are under development. While the current run of macOS releases are named for well-known landmarks in California, internal codenames follow a different protocol.

Two different leakers, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and X user @nicolas09F9 have come up with the following list.

  • iOS 27: Buttercup
  • macOS 27: Honeycrisp
  • watchOS 27: Orchid
  • visionOS 27: Eclipse
  • tvOS 27: Lotus

It’s unlikely these names will persist in the final releases.

Lots of new Macs coming including a cheap MacBook

Every Apple device has a unique product code. And when those product codes are leaked it gives us insight into Apple’s product roadmap.  Here’s what we know from a list of product codes that was leaked.

  • J714c  – MacBook Pro 14-inch with an M5 Max chip
  • J714s  – MacBook Pro 14-inch with an M5 Pro chip
  • J716c  – MacBook Pro 16-inch with an M5 Max chip
  • J716s  – MacBook Pro 16-inch with an M5 Pro chip
  • K114c — MacBook Pro 14-inch with an M6 Max chip
  • K114s — MacBook Pro 14-inch with an M6 Pro chip
  • K116c — MacBook Pro 16-inch with an M6 Max chip
  • K116s — MacBook Pro 16-inch with an M6 Pro chip
  • J704 – Mac Pro
  • J804 – Mac Pro
  • J775c  – Mac Studio base model
  • J775d – Mac Studio premium model
  • J813 – 13-inch MacBook Air
  • J815 – 15-inch MacBook Air
  • J700 – new MacBook

We’ve already covered the anticipated new low-cost MacBook which could run the A18 chip expected to debut in the iPhone 17, which is expected in September 2025.

The folding iPhone in coming in 2026

Speculation about a folding iPhone has been floating around for a couple of years. But, those rumours eventually shifted towards Apple developing a folding iPad or, possibly a Mac made up of two displays.

Supply chain publication DigiTimes says Apple has now moved to the prototyping stage for the folding iPhone. We can expect that to come in 2026 which will be the year Apple celebrates the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. Apple celebrated the iPhone’s 10th birthday with the iPhone X which has a new design and introduced the notch, FaceID and a new look.

It would make sense for Apple to celebrate the beginning of the iPhone’s third decade with a new look.

But while the folding iPhone is perhaps just a year away, a folding iPad is less likely. DigiTimes reports that Apple “has decided to pause progress on the larger foldable device for the time being.”
