Apple slips up revealing a bunch of new products

A new software tool that Apple released and then removed revealed references to a number of, as yet, unannounced products. The accidental leak confirms much of what other leakers and pundits have speculated over the last few months.

MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris discovered references to seven new and updated products. Those were:

  • A new HomePod mini with an S9 chip or newer
  • A new Apple TV with an A17 Pro chip
  • A new Studio Display with an A19 Pro chip
  • A new iPad mini with an A19 Pro chip
  • A new low-cost iPad with an A18 chip
  • A new Vision Pro with an M5 chip
  • Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 with an S11 chip

Most of these fall under the category of obvious updates that we can expect. Vision Pro, iPad mini, iPad, Apple TV and HomePod mini have not seen recent updates so are probably due for a refresh. And the Apple Watch sees an annual update so there are no surprises there.

Apple’s current strategy of revealing a new processor update annually looks set to continue as well although not all products get annual updates. For example, the Vision Pro shipped with a M2 processor but looks to be getting a boost to an M5 although other leaks suggest Apple is testing the Vision Pro with an M4 chip.

A refreshed Studio Display makes sense given it’s stuck at 27-inches while the premium market has moved far beyond that (I work from a 42-inch widescreen) and it’s been three years since it was released. But I’m still somewhat baffled by Apple’s desire to play in the display market given it’s highly commoditised and it’s difficult to see what Apple could bring that isn’t already available.

It’s time for Apple to get out of the standalone display business
