The NBN has been one of the most kicked about political football of modern times. After years of technology pivots, statements that fast internet was unnecessary and a divide between what urban and rural areas could get, we are finally seeing some progress warthog a massive NBN speed boost. From September 14, the NBN’s faster speed tiers received a speed boost without a price increase.
- 100Mbps plans are going up to 500Mbps
- 250Mbps plans are going to 750Mbps
- 500Mbps plans are going to 1000Mbps
Upload speeds are also being boosted.
If you’re on one of the 12, 25 or 50Mbps plans, you won’t see a change.
We’ve already seen some Retail Service Providers (RSPs) offer the NBN speed boost at a lower cost as they seek to get ahead of the market. For example, Exetel kicked things off while Tangerine wasn’t far behind.
If you’re on a slower tier, shop around as you may find the new 500Mbps is being offered at a similar price depending on who your RSP is.
Switching to a different RSP is trivially easy these days. Once you choose a new provider the process is usually completed in a couple of hours. It’s unlikely you’ll need to have a technician come in to do anything. At most, you may have to restart your NBN modem and any networking gear you have at your home of office.
