The new iPhone battery specs tell an interesting story

Apple typically keeps the detailed specifications the batteries in the iPhone quiet, in contrast to other smartphone makers that often boast about capacities. But the folks at iFixIt have done some digging to break down the spec and what they mean – particularly for the un-numbered iPhone Air.

iFixIt’s analysis reveals that the iPhone Air has the lowest capacity battery of the new iPhone 17 and two new iPhone 17 Pro models announced last week.

The relevant comparison is between the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro. Based on the information presented by iFixIt and from Apple’s specifications here’s what we know.

iPhone AiriPhone 17 Pro
Battery capacity3149 mAh4252 mAh
Display size6.7-inches6.5-inches
Rated battery life27 hours33 hours

So, while the iPhone Air has almost 25% less battery capacity, that costs it less than 20% in rated battery life. The discrepancy is likely due to specific tweaks in how then iPhone Air manages its processor during intensive tasks such as video playback. Apple measures battery life by stating how long video playback can be sustained between charges.

The iPhone 17 battery has a capacity of 3692 mAh and battery life is rated at 30 hours. But it has a lower-powered A19 system chip and smaller 6.3-inch display. Its battery life sits between the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro. This seems reasonable when you look at the different specifications.

iFixIt speculates that the iPhone Air’s less capacious battery will need to be charged more often leading to decreased life.

Apple’s ability to alter the internal design so most of the computing components are housed in the plateau on the rear may mean battery replacements will be easier for repairers. This will aid longevity.
