NBNCo’s Accelerate Great program has started to drive Australia up the global internet speed rankings. Australia has moved seven places up the rankings with average download speeds of 135.31Mbps recorded by the Speedtest Global Index. The data covers September 2025, the first full month following the speed boost.
Global average download speed increased from 106.84Mbps in August 2025 to 119.91Mbps the following month. Australia jumped from 101.19Mbps to 135.31Mbps over the same period. That means we outpaced the rest of the world and moved from 55th place to 48th position. For some reason, Ookla’s data says we moved up six places even my maths says we jumped seven spots.
This is a great improvement over last month’s results.

The Accelerate Great program automatically increased the internet speed of many Australians at no cost and without the need to change providers or go through any other annoying processes.
- 100Mbps plans went up to 500Mbps
- 250Mbps plans went up to 750Mbps
- 500Mbps plans went up to 1000Mbps
Over the last two months of reports, Australia has moved up from 60th position to now be in the top 50 and well ahead of the global average.
