Following on from iFixit’s look at battery tech in the latest iPhones, DPReview has looked in the iPhone 17 camera technology. For those who see their iPhone as a camera that can be used for communications, this data will help make the right decision when it comes to buying a new iPhone.
The three new iPhones have different numbers of camera lenses. While more lenses is generally considered better, there’s more to it. Each camera has a different purpose.

iPhone Air has a single wide-angle camera while iPhone 17 has the same camera but adds an ultra-wide camera. The iPhone 17 Pro adds an additional telephoto camera for more range and flexibility.
DPReview summarises the iPhone 17 camera technology in a handy table.

The main things to note are
- The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have the same camera technologies. This is a change from some past iPhone Pro Max models.
- iPhone Air has a single camera that is the same as the iPhone 17 main camera. The iPhone 17 offers more options through its second lens.
- There RE more zoom options through their third camera and larger sensors on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
If you’re into taking lots of selfies, all three new iPhones have the same front camera with higher resolution than previous models and a square sensor.
We are now in an era where communications services and access to apps has become commoditised. That means people buying a new iPhone are looking beyond basic services. Enhanced camera technology gives iPhone owners a reason to upgrade. And for those who flip between iOS and Android, Apple’s camera technology could give them a reason to buy an iPhone.
